September 2014 Athlete of the Month: Shelby Vaughn
What makes you, you? I am 24 years old and from Tulsa, Oklahoma! My husband is in the Air Force and we have been stationed at Joint Base Charleston for a year and a half! I am currently a homeschool teacher for 2 children on the Air Base and run a tutoring program. I am looking forward to starting Nursing School in the fall!! I have been at CFNC for about 8 weeks and joined with my husband Tyler!
Describe your experience at CFNC. Coming to CFNC has been of one of the best experiences I have had in the fitness world. As someone who was brand new to CrossFit, the coaches do an incredible job of not only teaching the movements, but also scaling the workouts and teaching me how to be successful at my level. I love the community environment at CFNC and that from beginner to elite CrossFit athlete there is a place for you there
What has been your favorite CrossFit moment so far? My favorite CrossFit moment so far is when I finished my first “official” wod on the Fourth of July. I was positive I couldn’t do it and the moment I finished I was elated!
What are your major life goals? I would like to finish my nursing degree and work with children in a pediatrics unit. I also would like to get to a healthy body weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle. CrossFit has already helped me start to achieve my weight loss goals and is teaching that it is important to be consistent not only at the gym but also at home with the food I am eating.
What are your three major CrossFit goals?Three of my current CrossFit goals are to learn how to do pull ups, double unders and eventually hand stand walks.
What has been your favorite CrossFit WOD and why? My favorite CrossFit WOD is a chipper we did a few weeks ago. This was one of my favorites because my goal was to get half way through the WOD and I actually finished it with a minute left before the time cap. It was difficult but I was very excited when I was able to finish the entire wod! (80 cal row, 70 Burpees, 60 push ups, 50 box jumps, 400 m run, 30 sit ups, 20 pull-up, 10 hspu)
Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Wherever the military sends us!
What is your favorite cheat meal?My favorite cheat meal is the Mahi tacos from Sesame Burger! Honestly, anything from Sesame Burger!
What is the most challenging aspect of CrossFit? I feel like the most challenging aspect of CrossFit is the mental aspect. Once I get over the fact that “I can’t do something,” and just do it, then I realize I can do more than I ever thought. Most of the time I stand in my own way.
What do you hope to achieve through CrossFit? Not only do I want to achieve my goals, but I want to always challenge myself and become stronger every day.
