Congratulations to Tessa! She is our June member of the month. You may not have seen her lately because she has been traveling and working in Africa for the past few weeks. However, we are excited she will be back soon for her last few weeks in Charleston at CFNC. In July she will be making a move to Napa, California, where she recently took a job as a pediatrician. She is one of our original members and we will miss her greatly!!

Athlete Profile: Tessa Wyborny

What makes you, you?
Wow this is like an interview question for medical school… Let see, I was born and raised in California. I spent most of my time in and around the pool (partly because we lived across the street from it all my life). My family is very active, both my brother and I played collegiate sports and as a family we could be found most holidays spending time together at the gym or some type of sports competition. In addition to my love of sports and all things athletic, I also love traveling and having adventures. I like to say yes to things even when I’m not sure I should. So far, it has brought me a ton of great memories and a lot of great friends. I really enjoy helping people whether that be through my job or at the gym.

Describe Your Experience at CFNC
When Cara and Craig started to talk about opening CFNC, I knew I had to be a part of it. As most of you know, I live all the way in James Island and sometimes it takes FOREVER to get to the gym (thanks Ashley Phosphate), but it is always worth it. I make the drive every day because I enjoy the community and the positive atmosphere of the gym and most of all because its FUN!

What has been your favorite CrossFit moment so far?
There are so many both personally and for other people. I would have to say I was most proud of myself for getting my (second) first muscle up. If anyone knows the struggles I have had to even get my first muscle up (which took about 2 years of almost daily struggles) and then not being able to do another one for another 2 years. I would like to say that I was totally cool about it, but I remember getting so frustrated almost daily. Ultimately, I made a plan to practice for a certain amount of time per day and then one day it just clicked. I think once I let go of what I thought I should be able to do, it came so much more naturally.

What are your major life goals?
One of my major life goals was to become a doctor (technically I already am one, so check), but I am about 30 days away from completely finishing my training (finally!) which is a big accomplishment. Besides that, I really want to be a citizen of the world. By that I mean, I really want to help to make children’s lives better though health care both in the U.S. and internationally. I think that Crossfit helps me to maintain balance in my life. I realized a long time ago that making my life completely about one thing made me very unhappy and Crossfit allows me the time to just relax and have fun with other like-minded people. In addition, Crossfit makes it easier for me to go on my adventures whether that be walking 2 hours to and from the hospital I worked at in Africa or my next adventure of hopefully hiking the trail to Machu Picchu in Peru.

What are your three major CrossFit goals?

  1. Stay healthy (seriously important for me, I swear I turned 30 then I kept getting injured)
  2. 600lb Crossfit total
  3. Keep having fun!

What has been your favorite CrossFit WOD and why?
I don’t know if I have a favorite. I definitely have some that I really don’t enjoy, some of that is because i have done a few of the named work outs enough times to know how much they suck! I tend to like chippers a lot and workouts that have a bunch of skills in them. I guess I am pretty proud of how far my gymnastics has come since I started. It took me close to a year to even kick up to the wall on my own when I first started doing Crossfit!

Where do you see yourself in five years?
Hopefully, still doing Crossfit somewhere whether that be in California or maybe somewhere internationally. I have always dreamed of being able to work abroad with the red cross or doctors without borders. I would also love to return to playing water polo which is my first athletic love.

What is your favorite cheat meal?
I love all things BRUNCH basically. If it involves a Bloody Mary and brunch after a workout on the weekend then I am all about it. I also love all ethnic foods particularly thai food, indian and sushi.

What do you hope to achieve through CrossFit?
I want to be active and stay healthy for the rest of my life. I also want to keep meeting new people and making new friends, especially ones who don’t mind if I am sweaty or covered in chalk.

What is the most challenging part of CrossFit?
I think its the part of Crossfit is that it keeps evolving. Just when I think I have mastered some skill there is something else for me to work on.

Share a favorite recipe
I have a bunch! I think my most recent favorite was pesto spaghetti squash with roasted tomato, grilled chicken and egg.
