Congratulations to Kym Kline, our January Athlete of the Month! We have known Kym for several years now and we were beyond ecstatic when she joined CFNC almost a year ago. Over the past few months she has been very dedicated in the gym and her hard work has paid off. We wish her the best on her new journey moving out of state and we know her personal health and well being will only continue to grow!

What makes you, you?
I’m currently trying to figure that out myself! Ha!

Describe your experience at CFNC.
Every day is a new, eventful, interesting, strengthening, fulfilling experience at CFNC… Especially with the noon class…

What are your major life goals?
My main goal right now is to go back to school. I’m sure it won’t be easy doing so while raising two active kids. Crossfit helps me keep my head clear to be able to focus on the different things going on in my life. Crossfit reminds me that I can push and do what I set out to do even on the days I feel weak.
What has been your favorite CrossFit moment so far?
Favorite moment? I don’t have just one… I think my favorite moments are when I get a new PR. I don’t see myself as being very strong physically so to crush a previous weight/time really surprises me and makes me feel all giddy inside.

What are your three major CrossFit goals?
3? I really just have 1… I want that damn pull-up. I’ve crossed almost everything else off my goal list since February but that.

What has been your favorite CrossFit WOD and why?
Hmmm… I think Annie is my new favorite… I’ve seen my time drop from 15+ scaled to under 10 RX and that feels good… Now to do it even faster… Also I love partner wods. I always tend to push a little harder for fear of letting my partner down so I always feel a little stronger after them…

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
5 years? Oh lord, I don’t even know where I see myself next week. Since I’m planning to go back to school this year and I have a move planned, I’d love to be working, happy, healthy and able to do more RX than scaled wods, pull up included.

Share a recipe for a favorite clean meal.
I have so many favorites… My go to is kale chips… Tear kale apart, drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle garlic salt on them. Spread out on a pan and bake at 350 until edges are brown.

What is your favorite cheat meal?
I try not to do cheat meals because they always leave me feeling bloated and gunky, so I tend to just take 1-3 bites and walk away from it… I think my favorite cheat bite(s) would be the triple layer chocolate tower from Kaminsky’s downtown… . The slice of cake is big enough to be a meal.

What is the most challenging aspect of CrossFit?
The most challenging part for me is staying out of my own head. There are some things I flat out know I can do but that little voice starts talking and I have a hard time making it shut up.

What do you hope to achieve through CrossFit?
I hope to be a good example for my kids. I’m hoping my drive and enjoyment of Crossfit will be seen by my kids and help them to look at exercise and being healthy as fun, natural and needed as much as breathing is… I want to be a positive example for my kids. They see me fail at things with Crossfit but they also see me push and work hard to meet and crush my goals… I want them to continue to enjoy to move and gain their own strength.

Side note from Kym:
Since starting CFNC there have been a lot of changes. I had been doing Crossfit for about 3.5 years and I hadn’t made many gains. The first few months there were all about corrections and there were days I literally wasn’t even breathing the right way or at the right time. I’m most thankful for the patience of the coaches over the last 10 months. I’ve gotten PR’s in KBS, deadlifts, TTB, handstands, max # of rope climbs in a wod, 500m row, one mile run, half marathon time, power cleans, hang cleans, snatches, OHS, back squats, front squats, push press and bench press to name a few. I got my chin up and my double unders consecutively. I have even been able to do ab mat sit ups with out the dreaded monkey butt! (Yay for no screaming in the shower!)

I’ve lost over 30#, lost over 11% body fat and I’ve lost over 32 inches all over.

I’ve never seen myself as a competitive person yet when Craig says “don’t let beat you”, I move faster. The simple words ” ‘atta girl” have come to be ones I work towards hearing each day in the box. I honestly love everything about this place.
