Congrats to our May Athlete of the Month, Bethany Smith!!!!!! Learn a bit more below:

What makes you, you?
My faith in God, which drives the motivation for how I live life. I also grew up behind 3 brothers in a military family, so that helped create a sense of determination and perseverance. Giving up was never an option and neither was giving anything less than your best .

Describe your experience at CFNC.
I was a little (ok, a lot) intimidated when David talked me into trying the intro class. But after coming to classes and getting to know everyone, I couldn’t enjoy coming to a place more! The coaches are great and everyone is so encouraging of where you are in your fitness journey. Progress is being made slowly but surely!

What are your major life goals?
Last year was a year of major life events. I finished up my BSN and David and I had our first baby, Nicolas. So now the goals are to spend as much time with my family as possible and raise Nicolas to be an awesome person.

What are your 3 major CrossFit goals?
I want to be able to do all the things…but that will take some more time. So, I had set a goal this year to try and get double-unders, be able to do a pull up and loose the rest of the weight I accrued while pregnant.

What has been your favorite CrossFit moment so far?
So Murph is the most memorable moment for me so far. It was literally the second crossfit class ever and there I was walking into the gym to do Murph. I had no idea what was going to happen. I was unable to move my arms from a 90 degree angle for about a week after. The following year, I was 4 months pregnant..super tired and nauseous, so that was fun. It will be interesting to see how this year’s version of Murph goes!

What has been your favorite CrossFit WOD and why?
I really enjoy any partner WODs. Having the extra incentive to not give up and to push a little harder is something that helps me stretch out of my comfort zone.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I see David and I living an active life and still bring Nicolas to the gym! Its crazy to think that Nicolas will be in kindergarten then! I hope to still be working with pediatric patients in some way. I would also like to go on another medical mission trip overseas.

Share a recipe for a favorite clean meal.
So our go to at least once a week is baked Salmon, Jasmine Rice and Broccoli. It’s super easy and only takes about 30 min to make everything. Salmon goes in the oven at 400 for about 15-20 min, rice goes in a pot on the stove, and the broccoli is steamed. And boom…clean meal, not much fuss.

What is your favorite cheat meal?
I’m not sure if ice cream counts as a cheat meal all by itself, but I love ice cream! Chocolate. With Sprinkles. And if I want to get crazy, put it in a waffle cone.

What is the most challenging aspect of CrossFit?
Definitely the mental game! I look at the workout and think “huh, that doesn’t look so bad,” But about half way through those workouts when I want to stop because everything hurts or I’m out of breath, I have to remind myself that I will not actually die and can make it through.

What advice would you give to someone new to CrossFit?
Advice that has been given to me that I find myself repeating to myself often is “Trust the process.” Progress will come, you just have to stick with it and be consistent.

What is your personal “walkout song” or anthem?
I don’t really have a specific song that gets me pumped, I’ll workout to anything!
