Congrats to our Athlete of the Month, Colton Smoot! Who knew he was such a big Celine Dion fan?!

Athlete Profile- Colton Smoot
What makes you, you?
Man, opening up with the hard question…

I’d say that I’m a nerd at heart, and love to figure out why and how things work. I love cooking almost as much as I do working out, and eating more than both! I have a brother and a sister, both older, so that probably explains my sarcasm and dry humor.

Describe your experience at CFNC.
I came to Charleston in 2015 with every intent of trying multiple gyms around the city. CFNC was the first I tried, and I knew it was a good fit for me. When you walk in the door, you can tell there are good people with a good community.

What are your major life goals?
I’ll be honest, I don’t plan my life out too far in advance. Right now, my main goal is to get my masters, and then just see where that takes me. Past that, I’d like to travel more and ski the mountains across the world.

What are your 3 major CrossFit goals?
I’d like to snatch 250, C&J 315, and get back to being able to run a sub 6 mile

What has been your favorite CrossFit moment so far?
My favorite moment is every time a workout finishes and I get to go lay in front of the fan.

What has been your favorite CrossFit WOD and why?
Fight Gone Bad. In my mind, it’s the workout that shows the most improvement over time. It’s a workout that has a bit of everything (strength, conditioning, strategy, etc..). Done right, it should feel like one of the worst workouts you’ve ever finished. It’s my favorite workout to hate.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I have no idea. As long as I’m still working out, liking what I do for work, and living somewhere awesome like Charleston I’ll be happy.

Share a recipe for a favorite clean meal.
Stuffed peppers:
1lb ground beef (leaner the better)
2-3 cups cooked rice (depends on how many carbs you want)
1 can tomato sauce
1 can tomato paste
3 bell peppers

Brown ground beef in pot and season to taste. I usually do salt, pepper, cumin, worcestershire, and red pepper flakes. Add tomato sauce and paste, then simmer for 10 minutes. Add the rice and mix.

Cut peppers in half and remove seeds. Stuff peppers with beef/rice mixuture and bake at 325 until peppers are soft and the stuffing has a nice crust.

What is your favorite cheat meal?
I have to pick one?
While its not the most unhealthy thing in the world, pretty much nothing can beat a nice center cut ribeye with brussels, a sweet potato, and a hefty glass of bourbon.

What is the most challenging aspect of CrossFit?
Mental toughness. Making yourself do the things you don’t want to do is by far the hardest part.

What advice would you give to someone new to CrossFit?
Its almost never as hard as you think it will be. Occasionally it is (looking at you 14.5/16.5), but most of the time its not.

What is your personal “walkout song” or anthem?
My Heart Will Go On – Celine Dion
