She is one of the most genuine people you will ever meet and we are lucky to have her in our community!
What makes you, you?
The three most important aspects of my life are faith, family, and friendships (and that’s not some kind of mantra – the alliteration is simply a coincidence 😉). I absolutely love people…I love talking to people and building relationships…I love learning about what is important to them and hearing the stories that have shaped who they are. One thing I really love about CrossFit is that there are people from ALL different backgrounds, and we have this one common interest that causes our paths to intersect when perhaps they never would have otherwise.
I have the privilege of working with veterans everyday as a Nurse Educator at the VA, and for someone who loves good stories as much as I do, there’s no better job. To all of you who have served, are currently serving, or are the partner/spouse of someone serving, thank you for all the sacrifices you have made and are making to allow us to enjoy all the freedoms to which we awake each day.
I love traveling, reading, and being outside…if you’re ever in need of a partner for an outdoor adventure, don’t hesitate to give me a shout. I love my family, and I try to see them as much as possible. I really love my husband, Jeff, and our fur-child, Nala. Oh, and I love the 5:15!
I know it may seem like there’s an excessive amount of love talk in this first answer, but the older I get the more I realize that focusing on who and what I love makes life a whole lot sweeter (and since Jeff gave me this last name, I figure I better try to live up to it 😉).
Describe your experience at CFNC.
Being an avid sports and fitness fan as long as I can remember, I actually followed CrossFit as a sport for years before I even considered making it a part of my life. Then, once I considered giving it a shot, I still waited a couple of years before walking into a CrossFit gym because I didn’t really think I could do it. After playing team sports through my first year in college, I dabbled in a lot of different types of fitness over the years…running half marathons, traditional group exercise, circuit training, etc., but I had never done any Olympic lifting or gymnastics, and I was pretty intimidated (read: terrified). However, in the fall of 2017, I took a different position at work that provided a more stable schedule and decided it was time to focus on getting as healthy as possible, and I knew CrossFit was the answer to that for me. After lots of research, I had no doubt that CFNC was the right gym, and I have not questioned that even once since the day I walked in. The coaching is TOP NOTCH, and the community is second to none. I’m a regular 5:15er, but I haven’t gone to any class that hasn’t been welcoming, competitive, and fun.
What are your major life goals?
I really just want to make the most of the life I’ve been given. I know that may sound cliché, but when I became I nurse I started to see just how fragile life can be, and over the past few years my appreciation for each day has really grown. I want to invest in people, hoping to bring joy and positivity to my relationships. I’d like to do meaningful work that improves both patient care and working conditions for nurses. This question is a really big one, and I could probably write a book if I let my brain and fingers keep connecting, but basically, I just want to live with intention…I want to avoid complacency and try to do things that matter (in the small, everyday things and in the larger, big picture things).
What are your 3 major CrossFit goals?
Gosh, I want to be able to do ALL the things! BUT if I must choose 3: 1) I want to continue to move better with improved mobility and stability; 2) I’d like to improve my Olympic lifting; and 3) I’d like to be able to do muscle ups and handstand walks.
What has been your favorite CrossFit moment so far?
I’ve had so many empowering moments since I started, but I think the best one was when I finally got my first strict pull up. I’ve had a deep desire to be able to do them since I was in elementary school and had to do the modified PE test every year with the chin-over-bar hold.
What has been your favorite CrossFit WOD and why?
I’m not sure that I have a favorite. I like anything that’s a bit of a grind, so I tend to enjoy (I’ll use that word loosely) some of the longer workouts. I’m sure that as my skill work improves, I’ll have less anxiety about the shorter, more skill-intensive WOD’s.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
There are a lot of factors that could really change even our one-year outlook, but my big picture hopes are to have grown our family, to have opportunities to see both of our families as often as possible, to be doing work I find enjoyable and valuable, and to be healthy and to have grown in my CrossFit abilities. I have a feeling that in five years I’ll also have grown in my tolerance for cold weather and will have embraced some snowy outdoor adventuring…at least I certainly hope so!
Share a recipe for a favorite clean meal.
Grilled salmon, asparagus, and sweet potatoes is probably one of my favorites.
Season the salmon with a little lemon juice and dill. Toss the asparagus in a little olive oil and fresh or minced garlic, and then sprinkle with lemon juice…then, wrap the asparagus loosely in foil before grilling. Dice or slice the sweet potatoes and toss with a little coconut oil and sprinkle with sea salt and cinnamon…wrap these loosely in foil before grilling.
What is your favorite cheat meal?
Ah geez, if I’m being honest, I love all the cheat meals! I’d have to say pizza is probably my go-to, but if we’re going out I’d choose Wild Olive, hands-down. If we’re talking about cheating at breakfast, though…give this girl a biscuit!
What is the most challenging aspect of CrossFit?
Having patience and trusting the process can be really tough sometimes. I like to catch onto things quickly and then just go for it, but CrossFit has knocked that out of me a bit. It’s hard to teach this body that’s been moving less-than-efficiently for 37 years to move well in just a session or two with a given movement. I’ve always tried to steer clear of failure, but I’m learning to embrace it in this journey and appreciate the ways I can grow from it.
What advice would you give to someone new to CrossFit?
Trust the programming and the process…don’t rush it. Be kind to yourself as you attempt new things. Don’t compare yourself to anyone else…some people have been doing this for years, and some pick up double unders the first time they try. Your journey is just that: yours…give it YOUR best, make the most of it, and keep things in perspective.
What is your personal “walkout song” or anthem?
I’m stumped on this one…anyone have any suggestions for me? I’m all ears!
