Congrats to Katie Heubisch for being our September Athlete of the month! She has been kicking ass and taking the last couple of years!

Learn a bit more about Katie below:

What makes you, you?
Trey would say “she’s a feminist” and “she’s a hipster that likes to mosh”. I would say damn straight. I also like to help others and am an advocate for mental and physical health. Being creative and spending time outdoors is also important to me. My family and Stevie Nicks (my dog) are important parts of my life, as well.

Describe your experience at CFNC.

I joined CFNC almost two years ago now. At the time I was struggling personally and hadn’t really found a community in Charleston. CFNC gave me that community. I am so grateful for the CFNC family and all the confidence and strength you guys have given me.

What are your major life goals?

My major life goals are to open my own therapy practice and women’s retreat (kind of like a therapeutic retreat that incorporates a lot of healing in nature). Eventually have a family but I think my brother will probably beat me to that.

What are your 3 major CrossFit goals?

Get ring muscle-ups again, be able to snatch some heavier weights, and handstand walks. 

What has been your favorite CrossFit moment so far?

My favorite moment in CrossFit was getting a ring muscle-up. I love that feeling.. flying in the air. It makes me feel like a kid.

What has been your favorite CrossFit WOD and why?

19.2 Toes-to-bar, double-unders, and cleans. I scaled this workout in my first year of the open and I think got to a 115lb squat clean and couldn’t get it BUT the girls at the gym sat around and cheered me on. It was such a great feeling to have that kind of support. I would love to try this one again rx’d.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

In five years I’ll be done with graduate school and hopefully getting some experience as a counselor. Probably still living my life like it doesn’t matter which way the toilet paper roll is facing, but who knows, maybe I’ll settle down one day.

Share a recipe for a favorite clean meal.

I guess I would consider this a “clean” comfort meal, but I like to make this baked chicken recipe with olive oil, almond flour, old bay, paprika, and a little s&p. It’s super easy and better for you than fried chicken. 

What is your favorite cheat meal?

Pizza! I could eat it every week.

What is the most challenging aspect of CrossFit?

CrossFit is so mental. Yes, strength and aerobic capacity are important, but pushing past your limits mentally is the challenge. Also, learning to pace yourself!

What advice would you give to someone new to CrossFit?

Just show up. It can be intimidating when you’re new. The atmosphere, the strong people, the tough workouts, but keep showing up each week. I’m not saying that the workouts will get easier, but eventually you might be one of those strong people.
